Another way to see the American family: Modern Family series

Just few weeks ago the series called Modern Family has started in the Fox channel and the focus of the discussion is how the relationship are going on the American family.

This series had been awarded in lots of categories in the last Emmy Cerimony, so it is such a success because of the funny way to approach subjects like how to deal with some issues in a family, for instance:

- the teenager daughter who started dating an older guy

- the gay brother who is married and just has adopted a baby from Vietnam

- the new father`s wife from Colombia who is nearly 20 years younger than him and unbelievably gorgeous.

There is nothing really new in those characters, especially if you compare to other famous series “Brothers & Sisters”. The main difference between Brothers & Sister and Modern Family, is the genre. The first one relates family problems in a dramatic way while Modern Family is comic and light.

According to the Emmy Awards, Modern Family is a good choice nowadays in the American TV. In my opinion, it is very worth dedicating 30 minutes of your time to watch this interesting series. So, go ahead and tell me afterwards what was it like, deal?

The dream became true

When I was around 15 years-old, I was thinking about to going to university, but I didn’t have enough money to pay my studies, because my family is poor, so other possibility was entering in a public university.

So, I’ve started planning what I needed to do to overcome  this situation. Then, in the last year of the high school a teacher helped me giving me a contact of a non-profit organization that provides scholarships, and I’ve got it!

So, in 1998 I started studying Psychologist course paying only 10% of the total price! It was a big victory, but it wasn’t easy at all. Many times I wished I lived near the university or had more time to study or sleep. There were a lot of rocks on the way, but I never give up my dream.

In 2002 I finished the university with honor! Nowadays I’m a successful business woman who works as a HR Consultant facilitating training courses.

I was think if I hadn’t studied so hard I wouldn’t have achieved my objectives.

Movie: À Deriva

I’ve got very impressed with this Brazilian movie. In an ordinary Sunday, I had lunch with my friends and we decided to watch a movie.

I’ve heard some good things about À Deriva and I was very interested in watch it. I was with high expectations, because I’ve watched an interview with Helio Dalhia, the director. And it was great!

The film is about family issues like cheating, confidence, cumplicity, love and passion. The dialogues are strong and soft at the same time. And there are somethings that you don’t have to say, just the face, and behavior shows what you mean.

Vicent Cassel, a French actor, plays the father who has an affair, and he speaks Portuguese in the film with a lovely accent.

Debora Block plays the mother with 3 children. She is visiblye unhappy with her life. She drinks a lot, she complains and criticize all time her husband.

The protagonist is the oldest kid, she is in a teenager. She is discovering her sexuality and the complicated relationships between her parents.

The story happens in Buzios, in Rio de Janeiro. So, there are a lot of scenes was in with sunny days, wonderful sunrises and sunsets.

The song is commoving touching and emotional. It was a classic song with piano and other classic instruments.
In the end, me and my friends left the cinema very reflexive and emotional.

After all, we agreed that À Deriva is with no doubt the best Brazilian movie of 2009 so far.

So, congrats for Helio Dalhia, Fernando Meirelles and all team for this brilliant movie.

Brazilian Movie: Divã

Recently I saw a Brazilian movie called "Divã", it was great. This story is about a woman in her 40's in crisis in her marriage. She is bored with the same thing day by day, the same routine with her husband and sons.
On day she decided to see a psychologist and do analysis for self-knowledge. During the film she met a guy who gave her some hope to feel attractive and sexy. She didn't feel like that with her husband.
She tried other relationship during and after her marriage. She had a lot of fun, she felt beautiful and powerful with other men, and she suffered too. She discovered a lot about herself and about her choices.
More and more, I get impressed with Brazilian movies, about their qualities and great stories. I'm very proud to be Brazilian and see this evolution in the cinema.

Movie: Slumdog Millionaire

The 2008 Best Picture Oscar winner was an Indian production and it is very impressive! When I saw this film I felt very annoyed, because it is a strong movie with a lot of scenes of violence and injustice.
It seemed like a Brazilian movie called "Cidade de Deus". It shows how life is in the real world with no make up.
"Who wants to be a millionaire" is a story about an Indian man who goes on to a gameshow to win a million dollars. He needs to answer questions correctly the questions about culture, politics, popstars and knowledge in general.
The movie starts when he has already won one million of rupees and he is accused of fraud because he is a poor guy who has lived al his life in a slum. Now he is the "tea guy" who works in a call center. In the show producers program's mind it is impossible for this guy to answer all the questions correctly.
Due to this fact he was sent to jail and suffered torture. The producer and the police assumed he was cheating, but he wasn't! The most interesting part of the filme is that he knows the answers, because he has experienced situations that remind him the answers. For example: when he was asked who was the composer of sophisticated music, he remembered when he was arrested the bad guy ordered him and other children to sing a song from this composer. So, he knew the answer!
Slumdog is also a story about love, conflict, treachery and hope. So, it is a grat movie!

Carnaval: A big brazilian party

In February we have Carnaval, a big brazilian party with samba and fun. We have 4 days off just for fun! People from around the world arrive in Rio, Salvador, Florianopolis, Recife and other cities to enjoy samba, axe music and drinking a lot.
I spent my Carnaval in São Paulo, where I live. I thought that the city would be more calm and empty !
On Friday night I went to a birthday party on Rua August. To my surprise I faced a “trio elétrico”, that it is a truck with people on top dancing and music going on. There were people dancing on the street too! When I finally arrived at the party, it was great! I had a great time over there.
For Saturday I had planned a lot of things to do: medical exams, go to the hairdresser, go get a manicure and pedicure, have lunch with my mother, leave some shoes to fix and I accomplished everything!
On Sunday I spent my free time at home. I went to a park to run and tried to go to the cinema, but it was crowded. Can you believe that? But it is true! São Paulo had a lot of people, in a way that I have never seen before at Carnaval time.
On Monday I went to the beach, in Guarujá. It was awesome! I went with my neighbors and we stayed there together with a friend of mine. We spent time in the sun, drinking, swimming and having a lot of fun.
On Tuesday I woke up late and called my friends to have lunch together. We went to a mineiro’s restaurant and ate a lot. At night we went to the cinema and afterward we went dancing.
In the end, I have nothing to complain about my Carnaval! It was amazing!
